Red Amnesia is film that is not afraid to take leaps across genres. It is a study of family life and loneliness, while also being an effective thriller and with supernatural elements. Director Wang Xiaoshuai manages to combine these story elements well as the narrative builds from what at first appears to be a family drama until it materializes into something much darker. Lü Zhong who plays Deng is very strong as an elderly woman who wants to remain useful through looking after her family while also coming to terms with her past. There is in her performance a perfect balance of vulnerability and strength and we the audience care for her and fear for her as the film progresses.
Red Amnesia is one of the films you can watch at the Spring Film Festival which takes place from January 25 -29, 2017 at the Shang Cineplex.
