Salditos, whose forays into the mountainous areas of Panay got him interest in local lore, created over 20 paintings in mixed media to capture these stories in tangible form.
His main source was Lola Elena Gardoce, a binukot. She was one of several women who were secluded and specially assigned to serve as transmitters of epic traditions. Lola Elena was awarded the Cultural Center of the Philippines Gawad Para sa Sining in 1992.
Salditos who also writes poetry, includes in this collection two large canvases of excerpted transcriptions of the recorded narratives along with two other large canvases of his own thoughts on the significance of the narratives to people’s struggle for a just society.
Saldito's Mga Sugidanon sang Tumandok (Narratives of the Native) will be on view at the UP Visayas Gallery in Iloilo City until May 31, 2017. For inquiries, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
